Femtosecond Electron Bunch Lengths in the Slac Fftb Beamline*

چکیده
We describe a new proposal to generate bunches as short as 35 fsec rms with the existing SLAC linac and damping ring. The bunch is compressed in three stages, starting with the existing ring-to-linac compressor. A second stage of compression is added in the form of a simple magnetic chicane installed at the 9-GeV location in the linac. The short bunch after the chicane generates a strong wakefield in the linac which provides a large correlated energy spread allowing a third compression stage in the existing Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) beamline. Peak currents as high as 30 kA are possible and when passed through a new undulator in the FFTB, can generate hard x-rays of very high peak brightness and pulse duration of 80 fsec FWHM. The short bunch is ideal for plasma and wakefield studies as well as providing abundant R&D for verifying micro-bunch behavior in the future Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) [1].

Design of an Optical Diffraction Radiation Beam Size Monitor at Slac Fftb
We design a single bunch transverse beam size monitor which will be tested to measure the 28.5 GeV electron/positron beam at the SLAC FFTB beam line. The beam size monitor uses the CCD images of the interference pattern of the optical diffraction radiation from two slit edges which are placed close to the beam path. In this method, destruction of the accelerated electron/positron beam bunches d...
متن کاملShort High Charge Bunches in the SLAC Linac*
These days the linac at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is mainly an injector for the PEP-II rings. But besides the electrons and positrons for PEP-II, it provides a 30 GeV electron or positron beam to the end of the linac into the FFTB (Final Focus Test Beam) area or creates a test beam for the A-Line. In the FFTB tunnel there are two plasma experiments installed, which have demo...
متن کاملGeneration of femtosecond pulses of synchrotron radiation
Femtosecond synchrotron pulses were generated directly from an electron storage ring. An ultrashort laser pulse was used to modulate the energy of electrons within a 100-femtosecond slice of the stored 30-picosecond electron bunch. The energy-modulated electrons were spatially separated from the long bunch and used to generate approximately 300-femtosecond synchrotron pulses at a bend-magnet be...

The Next Linear Collider (NLC)[1] electron and positron beams are capable of damaging the linac accelerating structure and beamline vacuum chambers during a single accelerator pulse. Machine protection system (MPS) considerations have an impact on the engineering and design of most machine components downstream of the damping ring injector complex. Beam tests have been done at the SLAC Final Fo...
متن کاملSLAC Linac RF Performance for LCLS
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) project at SLAC uses a dense 15 GeV electron beam passing through a long undulator to generate extremely bright xrays at 1.5 angstroms. The project requires electron bunches with a nominal peak current of 3.5kA and bunch lengths of 0.020mm (70fs). The bunch compression techniques used to achieve the high brightness impose challenging tolerances on the acce...
